Research and Publications

We research mechanisms and treatments for HCM. Patients participate in research if they wish.

Prior HCM publications of our group:

1.
Sherrid M, DeLia E, Dwyer E. Oral disopyramide therapy for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Am J Cardiol 1988;62:1085-1088.

Oral disopyramide improves obstruction and decreases symptoms. Even low doses with low serum levels cause a significant reduction in gradient.

2.
Sherrid MV, Chu CK, Delia E, Mogtader A, Dwyer Jr. EM. An echocardiographic study of the fluid mechanics of obstruction in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. J Am Coll Cardiol 1993;22:816-25.

Systolic anterior motion is caused by the pushing force of flow. After mitral-septal contact, obstruction begets more obstruction.

3.
Sherrid MV, Gunsburg D, Pearle G: Mid-systolic drop in left ventricular ejection velocity in obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The lobster claw abnormality. Journal American Society of Echocardiography. 1997;10:707-12.

Mid-systolic drop in left ventricular ejection velocity is due to true obstruction to ventricular emptying.

4.
Sherrid MV, Pearle G, Gunsburg D. The mechanism of benefit of negative inotropes in obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Circulation 1998; 97: 41-47.

Negative inotropes decrease systolic ejection acceleration, delaying systolic anterior motion.
